Think about the chores you complete each month to keep your Kansas City home looking great. Chances are, sweeping or vacuuming your floors, dusting your furniture, and tidying common areas are high on your list. There’s an area of your home that you’re likely neglecting to clean like you should — your upholstery!

If you want your home to look polished, keeping your fabric upholstery in tip-top shape should be a primary concern. Here are some upholstery cleaning tips to help you!

Fabric Upholstery Cleaning Tips

Vacuum Your Upholstery Frequently

Kansas City | Fabric Upholstery Cleaning TipsOur first upholstery cleaning tip? Be sure to vacuum your upholstery frequently. Dust, dirt, and pet hair (when applicable) can accumulate on your upholstery, making it look dingy and preventing effective stain removal. When wet, dirt will spread and cause further staining. When there’s a stain you need to move quickly, so while taking time to vacuum then is necessary, it will also help the stain set in. Prevent this problem by making vacuuming a regular part of your upholstery cleaning. Use an upholstery cleaning attachment to get into the crevices.

Upholstery Cleaning: Dealing With Stains

Chances are when you need upholstery cleaning tips, it’s due to a fresh spill. When tackling upholstery cleaning on new stains, time is of the essence. Blot your spull immediately before it sets. Do not scrub or rub the spill, but rather grab a white cloth and press down. Blotting may seem like common sense, but it’s crucial for upholstery cleaning!

Upholstery Cleaning: Picking Your Cleaner

Once you have completed the first step in upholstery cleaning — blotting the fresh stain — it’s time to select your cleaner. When conducting upholstery cleaning yourself, it’s important to consult the tags on your upholstery to read the cleaning guidelines. Here’s a key to the upholstery cleaning tags:

  • W: Conduct upholstery cleaning with a water-based detergent.
  • S: You must onduct upholstery cleaning with a water-free product, like dry cleaning solvent.
  • WS: Conduct your upholstery cleaning with either a water-based cleaner or a water-free cleaner.
  • X: Only a professional should conduct upholstery cleaning on this fabric.

If your upholstery no longer has a tag with the upholstery cleaning code on it, you should contact a professional like McGeorge Brothers Chem-Dry of Kansas City. We can provide quick, expert upholstery cleaning to remove fresh spills and even penetrate your upholstery to remove deep-seated stains.

Basic Oriental Rug Cleaning Guidelines:

Before beginning your oriental rug cleaning, you will want to take some basic measures. The first thing to do is to thoroughly vacuum both sides of the rug. As a rule of thumb, use a mild liquid soap or rug shampoo to do the cleaning. The water to be used should be cool. You should also be sure to not use strong detergents or ammonia water when you are completing your oriental rug cleaning. In addition, try to wash a small part of the rug to check for color run.

Once these preliminary measures have been taken, you are ready to begin your oriental rug cleaning. First, wash the fringes of the rug with a laundry brush. You can do this using the same soap solution you tested beforehand. Next, use the same solution to clean the bulk of the rug. After washing, completely rinse the area with plenty of water — preferably running. Then, try to squeeze out as much excess water as possible. Need some help? You can use a rubber water squeegee for this job. After the water has been thoroughly rinsed, let the rug dry. The best way to achieve this oriental rug cleaning step is by laying the rug flat. You can brush the pile a little if it feels stiff when dry. Additionally, you can also vacuum it for a short while in an effort to restore its original appearance.

How to Remove Cold-Weather Carpet Stains

Tags

, , , , , ,

As we transition from mild to cooler weather, many people begin dirtying their floors with chocolate, dirt, and even candle wax carpet stains. When you are stuck inside all winter long, the last thing you want is to be left with carpet stains. The solution? Good removal processes help keep carpet stains at bay throughout cold-weather months. Need some tips? McGeorge Brothers ChemDry of Kansas City has details about how you can eliminate these tough-to-remove carpet stains, keeping your carpets clean over the holiday season.

Tips for Removing Carpet Stains:

Chocolate

If you are anything like us, you probably enjoy cozying up in front of a fire on a cold evening with some dessert. Perhaps chocolate? As tasty as chocolate is, it can make for some nasty carpet stains. In the event that you have a s’mores carpet casualty, we have the scoop about how you can remove those pesky chocolate-induced carpet stains. Ready? Let’s get started.

For natural-fiber carpets, complete the following process. Using a detergent-filled bottle, spray the carpet stains and then blot the area with a white cloth (a paper towel will suffice, too). Next, apply an ammonia solution on the carpet stains. Then, administer a vinegar solution. Afterward, re-apply the detergent solution. Lastly, disperse lukewarm water over the carpet stains. The key? Between the application of each substance, blot the carpet stains with a white towel. If the chocolate stain is still visible, repeat the process a few times.

carpet stainsCandle Wax

What goes well with chocolate but can leave behind nasty carpet stains? Candle wax. That’s right, as lovely as their aroma and lighting is, candle wax can be difficult to remove from carpeting. However, using our fool-proof three-step process, candle-related carpet stains will be a thing of the past.

To remove these carpet stains from natural-fiber and synthetic-fiber carpets, you will want to press an ice-filled, sealed bag against the candle wax. After awhile, the stain will harden. At this point, you need to strike the area with a hard object, causing the wax to break loose. Lastly, mist a solvent on the carpet stains and blot with — you guessed it — a white cloth or towel and then apply warm water.

Dirt

Dirt is perhaps the biggest contributor to carpet stains throughout cold and wet winter months. Depending on what type of carpet you have, you will want to complete slightly different carpet-cleaning procedures. For synthetic-fiber carpets, take the following steps for the removal of dirt carpet stains.

First, vacuum excess dirt. Then, dab the area with detergent and apply pressure, pushing the solution into the carpet. Afterward, let it sit for an approximately 15-minute period. Whatever liquid remains can then be soaked with a fresh towel. The final step entails dipping another towel in warm water and dabbing the carpet stains gently.

For natural-fiber carpeting, there is a slightly different removal process for carpet stains. Your first order of business should be vacuuming the carpet stains to remove any loose dirt. Next, mist the carpet stains with a detergent solution and blot the area gently. Then, spray the stain with a vinegar solution, detergent, and lastly, warm water, all while blotting between the application of each mixture. Upon the completion of this process, your carpet stains should have vanished.

Surprising House Cleaning Tips for Your Floors

Tags

House cleaning is important. Your home is your safe haven. The place you go to relax with your family after long, tiring days. Because of this, you need your home to be clean and comfortable. McGeorge Brothers ChemDry of Kansas City knows what it takes to implement good house cleaning tips into your daily routine. Listed below are a few surprising — and even better, affordable —  house cleaning tips that can help you keep your floors spotless.

Unsuspecting House Cleaning Ideas:

Vinegar

Vinegar’s prominence in house cleaning tips goes back many decades. Apart from being a wonderful cleaning agent, vinegar doubles up as a deodorizer and disinfectant. To create an all-purpose cleaner, mix together equal parts of vinegar and water. The solution works well for cleaning and disinfecting floors.

For tiles and fixtures, vinegar eats away stains and tarnish incurred from hard water, leaving behind bright, beautiful, and shiny surfaces. And don’t let the initial overpowering smell of vinegar scare you away! When it comes to house cleaning, vinegar is an excellent solution. Once it dries, the smell disappears. Do, however, avoid using vinegar for the cleaning of marble surfaces.

house cleaningVinegar x Lemon

There are numerous house cleaning tips that suggest the use of lemon juice for varied house  cleaning purposes, such as the cleaning of tarnished copper and floors. Given the amazing results of both vinegar and lemon, many house cleaning tips involve combinations of the two. Here’s a simple tip to combine them and reap double the benefits: Put citrus peels in a jar and pour undiluted white vinegar over them. Let the mixture stand for a few days, and strain the vinegar into a separate container. The result? You have an effective natural cleaner for your floors and disinfecting surfaces.

Baking Soda

Know another surprising house cleaning tactic? You have probably heard baking soda can help remove odors from your fridge, but did you know it cleans carpets, too. Baking soda removes vomit and pet accidents effectively. Gently scrub baking soda into the carpet with warm water and a brush. Once the carpet is dry, vacuum it. Baking soda is a good product to use for the removal of pet odor.

Looking for other simple house cleaning tips used to eradicate bad odor trapped in carpets and rugs? Sprinkle the carpet with baking soda once a month and allow the powder to sit overnight until it’s vacuumed the next day. You can take your house cleaning a step further and mix a sweet smelling freshener into your carpet, too, by combining baking soda and potpourri oil of your choosing.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide, a first aid kit staple, is another unsuspecting household cleaning product.  The substance removes everything from blood, soft drink, and coffee to chocolate and candy from your rugs, all without affecting the dyes of the carpet. How is it done? First, try blotting the spilled liquids with paper towels and applying soapy water. If this fails, dab a three percent solution of hydrogen peroxide on the stain and let it sit for an hour. Within this time period, the stain should dissolve. If the stain does not entirely disappear, repeat the process and leave the hydrogen peroxide on longer.

You love your home, so it is crucial to keep up on your cleaning, paying it the attention it deserves. The solution? Use our house cleaning checklist to stay on track and keep your home spic and span. McGeorge Brothers ChemDry of Kansas City breaks things down, room by room, to help make our daily house cleaning checklist user-friendly and easy-to-do. When it comes to house cleaning, our checklist is sure to help you stay on top of your A game.

Our House Cleaning Checklist:

The Living Room

The sofa or seating arrangement in your living room is a main attraction. Because of this, it is important to make the sofa a priority on your house cleaning checklist. It is ideal that you take a minute to thoroughly wipe them. In addition, a handheld vacuum can help remove stray fabric on the surface of the seating area. Next, wipe clean any tables in this room. The final touch? Quickly rearranging any newspapers, journals, or electronics is a great way to give this shared central space a polished look.

house-cleaning-checklist-Kansas-CityThe Bedroom

Because the bedroom is such an intimate space, where you spend a lot of time, it should be included in your house cleaning checklist. It only take a couple of minutes to make your bed. And although this may seem like a minute detail on the scheme of your household cleaning checklist, a made bed can give the entire bedroom an orderly look.

Clothes and garments are another threat to your house cleaning efforts. To avoid this, add the organization of these items to your household cleaning checklist. Completing these simple tasks has the potential to make a big impact in the appearance of your bedroom.

The Kitchen

The first house cleaning checklist secret of maintaining a clean kitchen is to never leave any dishes in the sink. Oftentimes, one dirty dish turns into an entire sink full. When in doubt, clean each dish and put it away right after it’s used. In addition, it is advisable to clean any spills within the cooking appliances, such as the stove and microwave. Another house cleaning checklist task that should be completed is the regular swapping of kitchen towels. This is important, because these towels can act as meccas for bacteria and germs — somethingnobody wants in their kitchen.

The Bathroom

Although the bathroom can be a dirty area of the home, it should not go uncleaned. When it comes to your house cleaning checklist, the cleaning of the bathroom sink, toilet seat, shower, and mirror are absolute musts. The combination of a standard bathroom cleaner and some elbow grease should get the bathroom sink, toilet seat, and shower cleaned. And, as far as the mirror goes, windex and a cloth towel will do the trick.

Fall Cleaning Checklist Item #2- Curtains

In the Kansas City area, allergies can be a problem during the fall. However, if you put curtain maintenance on your fall cleaning checklist, you should suffer less from  sneezing and sniffles. Clean curtains and drapes according to the supplier’s recommendations, or just vacuum them with an upholstery attachment.

To freshen your drapes, add five drops of fragrance oil to an 8-ounce water bottle and spray the solution on curtains or drapes. Then, wipe or dust blinds with a damp microfiber material, as well as the woodwork around the windows.

Fall Cleaning Checklist Item #3 – Carpets

Carpet cleaning should be another task on your fall cleaning checklist, as carpet fibers can be an epicenter for dust and other allergen buildup. Because of this, be sure to give your carpets a thorough cleaning. To remove the most dirt and dust possible, vacuum the front AND back of area rugs. Open your windows on a mild weather day in Kansas City in order to avoid odors or fumes.

Defrosting and cleaning the freezer and refrigerator are big tasks that should be done a couple of times every year, so include them in your fall cleaning checklist, too. And do not forget to dust under the appliances and clean the drip pans. Additionally, dishwashers should also be cleaned twice every year.

Fall Cleaning Checklist Item #5 – Walls and Woodwork

Your home’s walls and woodwork should also be included on your fall cleaning checklist. As you do this, be sure to clean from left-to-right and top-to-bottom. To keep things simple, you can make an all-purpose natural cleaning agent in a spray bottle by mixing two tablespoons of baking soda with 16 ounces of water.

Fall Cleaning Checklist Item #6 – Attic and Storage Space

If you have the room, you will no doubt want to store some summer items in your attic or other storage space. As you do this, be sure to add a thorough dusting and vacuuming of this space to your fall cleaning checklist. Doing this will ensure that your belongings are in mint condition next summer.

Professional Cleaners: How to Choose Them

Tags

professional cleanersHaving a clean and well-organized home is one of the best things that a homeowner can do, and professional cleaners can help. Need assistance? It is almost impossible to maintain a well-cleaned home if the right techniques or services are not employed. The best way to avoid this is by opting for professional cleaning services. McGeorge Brothers ChemDry of Kansas City is a cleaning expert and we have some tips about how you can select the best professional cleaners.

Tips for Selecting the Best Cleaning Service:

If you want to select the best professional cleaners, you need to consider the following factors:

Professional Cleaners Need Professional Tools

If professional cleaners are armed with the proper tools, they can often speed clean, which is a good alternative. Good professional cleaners always use top-notch tools that can clean even the hard-to-reach areas of a home that are prone to dirt buildup. Choosing companies that have heavily invested in efficient equipment is always your best option.

Balance Between the Cost and the Services you Prefer

As much as you will want to have affordable services, it is advisable that you consider the quality of work you will achieve in the end. Some of the cheaper services available may not be as effective as you wish. Rightly so, it is good to ensure that the cleaning services you choose are up to the task, even if it means paying a little more. If you research properly, you can get quality services at affordable rates.

Scheduled Cleaning

All homeowners want professional cleaners that are conscientious of time. Because of this, it is important that you hire professional cleaners that are punctual. Good services are those that feature a regular cleaning schedule and an establishment where all the workers adhere to the rules. Selecting this kind of company will help you get consistent and reliable cleaning.

Proper Attire

The significance of proper attire cannot be underestimated under any circumstances. Cleaning itself needs attendants or cleaners who are smartly dressed to indicate that they are ready for the job. The style of dress should offer comfort, so that the cleaners can work comfortably.

As such, washable clothing that has been specifically designed for cleaning jobs is the most appropriate. Apart from cleaning aprons, other essential outfits include goggles, gloves, and supportive shoes. When it comes to the attire, it is crucial that your professional cleaners are dressed for the job.

Hire Qualified Professional Cleaners Today

Keeping a tidy and sanitary home is important, although it can be difficult to maintain. Keeping Fleas and Bugs Out of the House

Tags

, , ,

carpet-fleasDo you have unwanted fleas and bugs in your home? Unfortunately, fleas and bugs can actually mistake your carpet for a pet’s fur and will create their own homes right in your living room.

The most basic way to rid these pests is by running the vacuum cleaner. If you are having issues getting everything, use the nozzle in a back and forth motion. Focus on the corners and the dark space underneath furniture, because fleas may be hidden. Once you’ve gone over the entire area thoroughly, empty the bag of your vacuum outside.

Steam cleaning is one of the best ways to get rid of fleas and their eggs. The steam eliminates just about everything that could be crawling unseen around the house. Once again make sure to get that base and seam parts of the furniture.

To avoid this problem in the future, get a treatment that you can spray on the carpet and upholstery. These treatments also eliminate adult fleas and eggs. There are powders available that contain boric acid which are very effective if you don’t like the spray. Also be sure to throw any blankets and pillows into a sanitary cycle and set the dryer to its hottest setting

It’s likely any household pets are attracting these fleas and pests from coming indoors. Keep your carpets regularly steam cleaned and be sure to treat your pets for fleas.
