Not everybody likes to continuously bombard their carpets with commercial solvents every time they have a little spill. Many carpet stains can be prevented or removed with a simple mixture of water and vinegar. Below you will find 4 green carpet cleaning tips for common household spills.
Red Wine Carpet Stains
When red wine gets accidentally spilled on a light colored carpet it looks like a crime scene. Before you begin to panic over your new carpet, try using this green carpet cleaning trick. Sprinkle salt over the infected area and let it sit for about 15 minutes. The salt will absorb the wine and turn into a pink mess. Vacuum up the salt and then clean the area of carpet with a mixture of 2/3 water and 1/3 vinegar.
Remove Mildew from Carpet
Any moisture that gets into your carpet from a roof leak, overflowing bath tub, spilled drink, or flood has the potential to create mildew. You should always dry these carpet areas as quickly as possible. Use a sponge to clean the area with a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar. Make sure to thoroughly dry the area of carpet. You might want to use a hair dryer on a low setting and aim some fans at it just to be safe.
Coffee Carpet Stains
Beverages such as coffee and tea will come out of your carpet easily if you don’t let it sit for long. All you need to do is use a sponge and fresh water. If you let the stain set, create a vinegar and water mixture. Sponge the mixture in and rinse. Repeat until the stain is gone.
Removing Greasy Spills
Greasy spills can look a lot worse than they are. Sprinkle cornmeal over the infected area of carpet and let it sit for 5 minutes. Sponge the area with vinegar and water until the carpet is clean.
