homemade carpet freshener cleaningHaving the carpets in your home professionally cleaned always leaves your house smelling fresh. Naturally, you want it to continue smelling just as fresh between cleanings. If you’re feeling creative, a great idea is to make your own carpet freshener to use until your next cleaning.

Basic Carpet Freshener Recipe:

  • 1 shaker bottle
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 10-20 drops scented essential oil

If you don’t already have a shaker bottle, you can normally find them in the baking goods section of your local discount store. Another option is to get creative and make your own. You can create a custom shaker bottle by taking a canning jar and replacing the metal lid insert with a piece of cardstock paper that has a decorative pattern printed on it. Use a standard paper hole puncher to create 3 or 4 holes in the cardstock.

Now that you have your shaker bottle ready, pour 2 cups of regular baking soda in it. Add 10-20 drops of scented essential oil. Therapeutic grade essential oil comes in a wide variety of individual aromas and can often be purchased for only a couple dollars. Throughly stir your mixture up, place the lid on your shaker bottle and you’re done.

Keep Your Carpets Smelling Fresh

Take your homemade carpet freshener and sprinkle it across your carpets. Let it sit for about 15 minutes so that it has time to absorb the odors. Now all you need to do is vacuum it up. This is a perfect way to keep the home smelling great between professional cleanings.

Experiment with your carpet freshener mixture. You can have fun adding in herbs, cinnamon, and other delightful aromas. When you’re not using it to clean your carpets, a great place to store it is in the kitchen. Just leave the bottle under the sink and it will help neutralize kitchen odors, making the entire room smell delicious.
